A house on the move

Make it yourself (Issue IV/2021)

In the Philippines, there is a custom called “Bayanihan”, which reflects the Filipinos' strong sense of community. The term is derived from “bayan”, which means “nation” or “city” in Tagalog - the most widely spoken language in the archipelago. The bayanihan custom always comes into play when someone in rural areas moves house. Then it is customary for the neighbours to help. However, not by assisting in packing belongings, but by literally moving the house from one place to another. To do this, bamboo poles are attached to the floor or sides of the house and then this construction is taken on the shoulders and carried to the new address. This is made possible by the construction of the houses, which are traditionally made of light materials such as bamboo or palm leaves.
