The heavy rains in East Africa last autumn and winter destroyed a large part of Kenya's tomato harvest. Since then, tomato prices have risen sevenfold from five US cents a piece to between 25 and 35 US cents, and have remained at this level. The reason for the extreme weather is the Indian Ocean's changing sea temperature. Other countries in the region such as Uganda and Tanzania are also affected.
